Survivor!
So yesterday I'm at Chipotle enjoying my weekly carnitas burrito with black beans, rice, green salsa, mild salsa, and cheese and I'm reading the local weekly rag, The Pitch. I get around to the local events section and it turns out Survivor is playing a free concert at Crown Center yesterday evening. Did I mention SURVIVOR and FREE CONCERT?! YESSS!! I've been going through withdrawal since Van Halen has decided not to tour this summer and I couldn't go to Sammy Hagar's show because it was the week before the bar exam. I needed a rock show. A good, AOR-style, classic, guitar-driven rock show.
So I called up Lyn and said, "How are you?" and she says, "Um, aside from the splitting headache, I'm fine" and I'm like, "Cool, so Survivor is playing a free concert at Crown Center tonight, you down?" and she's like "Wha--who?" and I'm like, "you know, they wrote 'Eye of the Tiger' for Rocky 3?"
*silence*
Then she says, "Okay, sure, I'll go..."
So we get there a little before the opening act ends and grab a nice spot on the lawn. I didn't know we could have brought chairs or a blanket, but the grass was dry and it was comfortable nontheless. We talked for a while and then Survivor came on...
...but where's Jimi Jamison? And who's this new guy?
Turns out Jimi left the band in July--right before the tour for their new album began. So they have a new singer. But it wasn't like VH with Gary Cherone, no, this guy was the real deal. They did "Burning Heart" from Rocky IV and did about a two-hour show. Every song had a ten-minute, face-melting guitar solo at the middle and end of the song. Awesome. I gotta say, Frankie Sullivan is probably the best guitarist I've seen in years. If EVH would get back on the wagon, he might be able to sound just as good again. Just tight playing.
So they end the set with "Eye of the Tiger", which totally kicks ass. Everybody's on their feet just jammin' and the song lasts for like, fifteen minutes. CRAZY. And then the band exits. Well, Lyn and I decide to wait around for the encore, and sure enough, they come back out to a crowd of 30 or 40 people. We were able to make our way up close to the stage and just rock out to the last song, some song from the new album. Totally deafening, but worth it.
In the end, it was perfect. Great band, great night, great girl. Not much else I can ask for.

She must really like you if she'll go with you to a rock concert with a headache!
Rock on! Free rock concerts are always cool, escpecially when it's for a real rock band.
Chipotle only weekly? That's like 2 times too few for us!
Too much Chipotle makes for a fatty Crafty. Although, with the new one over by the HD and Target it's going to be tempting me everyday.
First - Chipotle is worth the extra five pounds, I am carrying that in honor of the best meal ever.
Second - love the Survivor post! I had that CD with Eye of the Tiger on it...where is that CD. Anyway, I remember it being a good one. And free is always good!
"Anonymous" is "Alli" by the way...not sure what happened there.
Survivor survived this long? Aren't they the definition of a one hit wonder?
